Tayfun Aybek, MD, is the chief cardiac surgeon in the University of TOBB, Cardiovascular Surgery. He is board-certified by the German Board of Cardiovascular Surgery. He worked more than 20 years in Germany at the University of Frankfurt (Johann Wolfgang Goethe) and at the Cardiac Center Rotenburg.
Specialty interests: Mitral valve repair, minimally invasive mitral valve surgery, robotic heart surgery, aortic valve replacement, minimally invasive heart surgery, heart valve surgery, heart valve repair, atrial fibrillation.
Number of Procedures Performed: As chief surgeon at the University of TOBB, Ankara/Turkey, he perform near to 1,000 heart surgeries each year. The majority of Dr. Aybek's procedures are heart valve procedures, especially mitral valve surgery. Dr. Aybek performs more mitral valve surgeries each year than any other surgeon in the world (250 cases/year).
Success Rates: The mortality rate of minimally invasive mitral valve repair at the TOBB University amounted to 0.4%.
Education and Training: He studied at the University of Istanbul, Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty. He spent his summers during medical study at Columbia University, Cardiovascular Surgery in New York and as well as at the University of Frankfurt, working as a researcher and assistant in the cardiac surgery operating suite. After medical study he went to Germany, whereas he made his carrier in the Cardiovascular Surgery.
Publications and Speaking: Dr. Aybek is a recognized expert in mitral valve repair surgery, robotic heart surgery and in the study and treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation. He has been instrumental in the development of new, less invasive treatment approaches for patients with mitral valve disease and atrial fibrillation. He has been invited to give hundreds of lectures at hospitals, academic meetings and seminars in Germany, Turkey, Brasil, Macedonia and abroad.
Dr. Aybek has written more than 200 publications, performed 3 live surgeries at the European Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery (Techno-College). He has submitted patent applications for several innovations, including a patent disclosing new techniques for full body perfusion in the aortic arch surgery for which he received Awards for Innovation.
Dr. Aybek is a current member of 9scientific societies, and he has been invited to join the editorial review board or act as an editorial reviewer for 11 scientific periodicals. He is the medical editor of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon, and has served on the editorial boards of British Journal of Medicine, The Heart Surgery Forum, Innovations, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and the Journal of Cardiac Surgery.
